It used to be called powder skiing, today it's called freeriding: immersion into a white dream world of untouched deep snow slopes.
200 km of marked powder runs and a host of other options make Arlberg a paradise for freeriders. Great emphasis is placed on safety and this is the top priority on every trip into the terrain. The Arlberg cable car companies therefore strive to take the issue of safety to the next level. This includes not only regular avalanche blasting. An equal priority is to give freeriders the opportunity to best prepare for any hazards in the terrain.
A short film with the Arlberg SkiStars
SPURTREU (faithful to the track), the new film by Stefan Häusl and Björn Heregger, has thrilled the freerider scene and beyond. Apart from the perfect skiing shots of Ski Arlberg, the film deals with the search for meaning and motivation and an unusual road trip. After its premiere at the Mountain Film Festival in St. Anton am Arlberg, the film toured through 9 cities in Austria and Germany with the Freeride Film Festival, and left no-one in any doubt that the filmmaker Hanno Mackowitz had created an extraordinary skiing film.
Freeride Safety Training at Rendl
Anyone skiing into our freeride terrain should not only be well equipped, but in particular be familiar with their equipment. In an emergency, every second counts in the race against time and the use of avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel must be instinctive. It is therefore important to practice avalanche rescue in advance. This is why the Arlberg Bergbahnen AG cableway company has set up Freeride Safety Training in partnership with Ortovox avalanche trainers. A short training course at Salzböden am Rendl featuring five buried transmitters is free of charge for all interested winter sports enthusiasts, especially skiing mountaineers and freeriders.
We have set up information panels on Galzig, Gampen and Rendl for our freeriders and skiing tourers. Here you find everything you need to know about avalanche risks and weather, the rules of conduct in the back country and final checks before your set out on your boundless skiing fun.
All ski schools at Arlberg offer courses, seminars and guided tours to make freeriding safer for our holiday-makers and increase the fun factor.
